The late Pastor Francisco Barajah.

A 39-year-old Mozambican pastor, Francisco Barajah, died on Wednesday after attempting to fast for 40 days straight without food and water, replicating Jesus Christ's biblical feat.

Barajah had fasted for 25 days before being taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with acute anaemia and organ failure.

Despite efforts to rehydrate him, he passed away shortly after being admitted. Barajah's religious community said that he often fasted but not for such extended periods, while his brother attributed the cause of death to low blood pressure.
