An American court has sentenced a Kenyan woman to 7 years in prison for defrauding the country of Ksh 480 million in a love scam.

Florence Mwende Musau, a 38-year-old Kenyan woman, was sentenced to 7 years in prison by the US District Court in Massachusetts for her role in a romance scam that stole millions.

She was fined $957,000 and ordered to forfeit $350,000 and a Lexus sports SUV. The fraud conspiracy involved the use of fake passports and multiple aliases to open bank accounts in Boston and launder the proceeds.

Mwende and five others targeted people in the US by tricking them into sending money to controlled bank accounts through online scams.

She pleaded guilty in 2021 and was sentenced to 44 months in prison and 30 months of supervised release.

The accounts were also used to collect fraudulent pandemic unemployment benefits. Court documents showed that Mwende acted on the instructions of her Nigerian boyfriend, Mark Arome Okuo, who met women on dating sites posing as a US Army soldier serving overseas and requested money for his return to the US.
